While the story begins in what seems to be a cliche fashion - boy at school can't wield magic, he's got his trials coming up, oh no, what's going to happen - it quickly takes a left turn and twists in multiple directions from there. He has created a world that clearly pays homage to Mistborn and Wheel of Time without being a copy of either. The fact that this is Islington's first book is both disheartening and incredible. Detailed worldbuilding with minimal infodumps? Check.Ī host of different characters with difficult-to-discern motivations? Check.Ī complex, relentless plot that takes off at a relentless pace a few chapters in and doesn't let up until literally the second-to-last page? Yes. ![]()
